Furry Friends Foster and Rescue, Inc. hasn't added a story.
As many of you may remember, Lulu was was hit by a car last week and her leg was broken. She slipped her collar and ran out in the road. Her foster mom saw her, followed into the road, and stood in the middle waving her arms for the car to stop. It didn't even slow down and practically hit her foster mom as well.
Lulu was rushed to the nearest emergency vet office - Central Veterinary Hospital in North Haven, CT, where she spent the night. It was hoped that a splint and bandage would stabilize the leg enough for it to heal well, without her requiring invasive surgery.
We tranferred her care to our regular vet after she was discharged, and she went there for a follow-up exam today - Wednesday, 12/16/15. We heard from our vet this afternoon regarding the results of Lulu's follow-up exam today. Unfortunately she will be needing surgery.
The x-rays showed a fairly large gap between the bones at the location of the break, which is right above the knee. Because of the location, it proved impossible to keep the bones from moving once the fracture was reduced. The splint and the bandage just did not allow for enough rigidity in the leg for that to happen.
Our vet consulted with an orthopedic surgeon. The surgeon will reduce the fracture and insert several pins to maintain stability.
We will have a written estimate, hopefully by some time tomorrow, for the surgery and medical care surrounding it, but we are looking at a total cost, with surgery, medical in-patient care following surgery, and follow-up visits, of about $2500.00
With an injury such as this, it is best to get surgery done as quickly as possible. The longer we wait, the more difficult the surgery and the more questionable the outcome for Lulu. Accordingly, we have scheduled the surgery for Monday, 12/21/2015.
People came together to help us with the cost of the ER visit and her overnight stay there. We had to put a deposit down of $1000 just for her to stay the night there and receive limited medical care, including the attempt at reducing the fracture, the splint, and the bandage, as well as pain medication, etc. As a result, we are hard pressed financially to pay the entire amount of the upcoming surgery.
In this season of giving we are asking - really BEGGING - you to help us defray the cost of this very expensive surgery. As a 501c3 approved public charity, all donations are 100% tax deductible.
