Athens Area Humane Society hasn't added a story.
Squishy, Weebles, and Pi need your help! We rescued these 3 puppies from animal control at the end of May because they were facing death due to their individual medical issues. We couldn't leave these puppies behind so we rescued them and now must work hard to raise money for their care. For the last month, we have been busy getting the pups seen by Vets so we and on the road to recovery. Each puppy has a unique story so please scroll down and read each of them. We knew that rescuing these puppies would be a financial commitment, but we also knew that our animal-loving supporters would fall in love with these inspiring pups the way we did and help them overcome! Now we need your help to ensure that we can continue to provide the care that these puppies need. Please donate toward their care if you are able! We also welcome anyone interested in meeting these special puppies to stop by the shelter anytime! Read their stories below.
This is Squishy. We rescued little Squishy, her mom, and her litter mates from animal control. When this little family was found, Squishy had string tied tightly around her paw. One of her brothers had a similar string tied around his arm & could not be saved so he was euthanized by animal control before we got there. We knew Squishy needed our help and we rushed her from animal control back to our shelter to begin treating her wound. We immediately put Squishy on antibiotics, but you could tell from the smell of her paw that it was not in good shape. She was rushed to UGA Vet Hospital on her first weekend with us because her paw was (literally) falling off. She stayed for most of the weekend while they kept her comfortable. When she returned to us she seemed to be feeling a little better, but was missing the bottom part of her paw. Thus we begun the healing process. We had to clean her paw and change her bandage daily. There was exposed bone and some very sensitive skin, but Squishy handled like a little champion! She is such a brave girl! Squishy had her first surgery last week where the doctor was able to stretch some of her skin over the exposed to bone. This will speed up her healing process, but she still has a long road to full recovery. Squishy will need more surgeries, but the doctor is not sure how many at this time. They will work to redistribute tissue during her future surgeries to give her more of paw so that she can have plenty of padding and eventually be able to walk normally. Since the skin can only stretch so far this requires several surgeries. We are so proud of this brave little princess and could not be happier with her recovery! Thanks so all the well wishes for Squishy and please keep following her journey. Her upbeat & happy personality has warmed our hearts, especially considering her rough start in life.
Meet Weebles, the brindle cutie below! She is a brave pup with another sad story of cruelty. We rescued Weebles from animal control b/c she was in such bad condition that they were going to have to euthanize her. We couldn't let that happen, especially after meeting this lovely dog! Weebles was found limping along the side of the road and a caring person picked her up and took her to animal control, where it was soon discovered that Weebles had been shot in the foot. The bullet shattered every toe and she was in so much pain. Our Shelter Manager took Weebles to our WONDERFUL local vet, South Athens Animal Clinic, where the kind & compassionate Dr. Mosher stayed after hours to help take care of Weebles. Weebles is still at South Athens b/c she needs her foot bandage changed daily & they have the capacity to care for more easily than we do at the center. She will be there until her gunshot wound heals and then she can get a cast and come back to us for further recovery! Weebles is getting her more permanent cast soon and then she will return to us and go into foster while she continues to heal until she is ready for adoption. Weebles is the ultimate love bug and just wants to be around people! Her inner light shines so bright and helps us see that love and kindness can outshine cruelty every time!
Weebles has the most beautiful smile! Below is a photo of Weebles the day we rescued her! She knew she was going to be safe and pain free from now on!
This precious puppy is Pi! Pi's story is not one of sadness, but she is having to overcome the odds still. Pi was born with a defect and only half of her back right leg. When we rescued her from animal control we were blown away because Pi acted like any other puppy-she was a playful, wiggly bundle of love! The only problem was that Pi was constantly using her leg that wasn't fully developed and causing it to have a wound that would not heal. She was rubbing it raw trying to run and play on it so our Vet reccommended amputation so that Pi's leg could heal completely and she could begin to adjust to life with 3 legs. She is young and resilient so we knew that Pi would bounce back quickly. We wasted no time getting her in for surgery. She is back at her foster home recovering from surgery and will be ready for adoption soon. Below is a photo of Pi after her leg amputation.
This is Pi prior to her leg amputation, the day that we rescued her actually!
**Please know that anything we raise above our goal will go into our Healing Paws Medical Fund for animals in need of costly medical care!**
