Athens Area Humane Society hasn't added a story.
Scabbers is one of our special rescue pups who was severely injured while playing outside like a normal puppy one day. We rescued Scabbers a few months ago from a rural county after he was dumped with his brother. The puppies were 9-weeks-old and need some serious TLC. Scabbers was always a standout pup because he is such a sweetheart. He loves people and is always so happy to see staff, volunteers, and visitors.
One morning recently, the staff took Scabbers out to potty and stretch his legs after being up for the night. Naturally, he was running around in the yard and getting some puppy energy out when he injured himself. He fell and then began limping and whining. The limping did not improve and Scabbers was not acting like himself at all so we rushed him to the vet.
Scabbers was diagnosed with a Tibial Tuberosity Avulsion
Fracture. An avulsion fracture occurs when a bone breaks and a
fragment of the bone is separated by the pull of an attaching
muscle, tendon or ligament. The tibial tuberosity is the prominent
bump on the front and top of the tibia, the shin-bone, below the
knee joint. This tuberosity attaches the patella (knee-cap) via a
strong thick tendon of the quadriceps muscle group. A fracture of
the tibial tuberosity often results in an avulsion fracture, by
virtue of the pull of the quadripceps muscles.
This fracture tends to occur in younger dogs, before this area
of the tibia has fully grown and fused to the rest of the bone. The
fracture occurs in puppies
associated with trauma, often falling from a height and landing
with the knee in flexion, tearing the bone fragment from its normal position.
Poor Scabbers! He was in so much pain and we knew we had to get him fixed fast! Luckily, Dr. Stout at South Athens Animal Clinic was up for the job. He even gave us a discount on the surgery! Now we just need a little bit of help to cogver this unexpected medical cost. Scabbers surgery was $1,000 and we know we can raise this with your help! Please consider donating to help with Scabbers' surgery so we can continue to help animals with medical needs. We could not save lives and help animls in need without our generous supporters!!
