Nearly three out of every five homeless youth were part of the child welfare system at some point in their lives, a rate almost 200 times greater than that of the general population. Transitional housing supports are few and far between with eligibility and location requirements that alienate many youth, especially in remote locations.

Youth need to be educated in many aspects of the housing process as the important information does come by instinct, nor is it provided to the thousands of youth who have left care over the years.

As well, these youth often don’t have anyone to help them actually move. Having a proper form of ID, Credit Card or driving education or person necessary to rent and operate a moving vehicle is a huge hurdle.

This problem extends to youth not being prepared to furnish their new homes with the necessities of each room. Many youth lose dignity and confidence being forced to sleep on the floor, and not having the basics in their bathroom, bedroom or kitchen to get by. All youth leaving the child welfare system deserve comprehensive housing education with moving and adapting supports.
