The Cold Ischemia Foundation exists because kidney disease is not simply a medical condition. It is a systemic failure that reshapes finances, families, and futures, and the people living through it are routinely handed a diagnosis without a map to navigate everything that follows.

Our mission is to build that map. We equip patients with clear, actionable guidance on living donation, treatment options, and the social and political forces that quietly determine access to care. We equip care partners, the spouses, siblings, and children who sacrifice income, sleep, and their own health, with recognition, resources, and a foundation actively pushing for their compensation rather than their continued erasure.

What sets this foundation apart is structural, not sentimental. We operate under a founding constraint of zero funding from pharmaceutical companies, dialysis corporations, or insurers. That independence is rare in this space, where much of the existing advocacy infrastructure is, directly or indirectly, subsidized by the very industries profiting from patient outcomes. Our work answers only to patients and care partners, and that alignment shapes every resource we build.

We also bring something insidious systems like this rarely encounter: nineteen years inside pharmaceutical clinical development operations, paired with process-improvement methodology typically reserved for correcting failure at an operational level. We apply that same diligent, evidence-driven rigor to a healthcare ecosystem that has never been required to prove it works for the people inside it. This is advocacy built on precision, not just passion, informed by lived experience with three kidney transplants and decades inside the very system we are working to change.

We are assiduous about identifying where this system breaks down, pragmatic about what can actually be fixed, and vociferous in demanding accountability from institutions that have grown comfortable operating without it. Our work spans patient education, care-partner advocacy, living-donation awareness, and direct engagement with the political determinants of health that too often go unexamined.

The Cold Ischemia Foundation is not another awareness campaign. It is infrastructure, built by someone who has lived on every side of this disease, for the community still searching for a way through it.

Kidney disease doesn't just take a body. It takes a calendar, a career, a marriage, and often the people who love you enough to stay through all of it. I've watched patients disappear into a labyrinthine system that was never built with them in mind — ...
