Cold Ischemia Foundation hasn't added a story.
Kidney disease doesn't just take a body. It takes a calendar, a career, a marriage, and often the people who love you enough to stay through all of it.
I've watched patients disappear into a labyrinthine system that was never built with them in mind — a maze of transplant centers, insurance denials, dialysis schedules, and social determinants that quietly decide who gets a second chance and who doesn't. I've watched care partners give everything: their time, their income, their own health, and receive nothing back except gratitude that doesn't pay rent.
This isn't a failure of medicine. It's a failure of design. The system is obdurate — resistant to change even when the evidence for change is overwhelming. And the people paying the price are patients and the care partners standing beside them, unpaid and unrecognized.
That's why I'm building a foundation — not another awareness campaign that fades once the ribbon comes down, but a structural intervention. A map through the maze. A resource that helps people understand living donation before it's too late to consider it. A framework that pushes for care partners to be included in decision-making, and yes, compensated for the labor they perform every single day without a paycheck.
This work requires assiduous, unglamorous effort — policy analysis, coalition-building, direct advocacy with legislators and health systems who would rather things stayed exactly as insidious and complicated as they already are. It requires ameliorating a system one barrier at a time, because there is no single fix for something this fractured.
I've spent years inside this system, on every side of it. I know its vicissitudes intimately. And I'm not asking for sympathy. I'm asking for partnership — funding that lets this foundation move from concept to infrastructure, from idea to something patients and care partners can actually use.
If you believe patients deserve a map instead of a maze, and care partners deserve recognition instead of silence, this is where you help build it.
