Musicworks magazine hasn't added a story.
Musicworks was founded in Toronto in 1978 and has remained a cornerstone of Canada’s creative-music community, while evolving into an internationally recognized publication that explores the innovative works, ideas, and perspectives of a diversity of artists. Starting as a DIY magazine created by and for artists, Musicworks introduced companion recordings in 1983 and began engaging a wider array of voices and topics pointing to new ideas, sounds, and technologies. A 2018 Toronto Arts Foundation Award nominee and twice nominated for a National Magazine Award, Musicworks is a professionally-run, not-for-profit hub that connects musicians, readers, and arts and educational organizations of all sizes through its media and outreach activities.
As Musicworks embarks on the next 40 years of its creative journey, our staff and board have pledged to broaden Musicworks’ content scope, contributor pool, visual presentation, digital footprint, and outreach activities. To nurture and expand our digital presence and community in 2019, we plan to launch:
- Our new Emerging Writer-in-Residence pilot program, with community partners
- Phase One of an accessible, streamlined Website hub with new content streams
- The evaluation, digitization, and dissemination of Musicworks’ archival content
Through subscriptions and individual donations, our readership community keeps Musicworks in tune—we make the magazine for you, after all!
When you help us reach our goal of $8,000, you are helping to ensure that audiences and readers will continue to discover and appreciate exciting music and sound art being created outside the mainstream channels.
Musicworks is also grateful for the ongoing support for our core operations from the Canada Council, Ontario Arts Council, SOCAN Foundation, the Canadian Periodical Fund, and Summer Jobs Canada. Support organizations such as Magazines Canada and the Canadian New Music Network keep Musicworks connected to the conversation in media and music. Our annual partnership with Ryerson’s Creative Industries program is an investment in the future of music and music media.

SIGNED BY THE ARTISTS! Set of 26 postcards includes original works by Udo Kasemets, Gordon Monahan, John Oswald, Hildegard Westerkamp, R. Murray Schafer and Michael Snow. Some postcards are actual compositions (you can perform them!), others are visual artworks in postcard form.
Created and signed by John Oswald, "Four Editors Edited" is part of a series of prints and time-based video works in which Oswald has combined images of individuals, each taken separately. The still images, such as the one shown here, present groupings of people who never shared a room together; but in this case, they share the past, present, and future of Musicworks. The four editors pictured are Micheline Roi, Gayle Young, Tina Pearson, and John Oswald. The second portrait, which is intimately related to the one depicted here, and identically framed, is currently wrapped in plain brown paper, and will only be revealed at the will of the buyer. Two framed C-prints, 12” x 12”.
