Faces of Opioids hasn't added a story.
This organization has been around for over 2 and 1/2 years and has grown to over 62K members worldwide. We have a very successful online support group on Facebook that brings all walks of life together to support each other. We have a children's program and work on various advocacy projects. Since we have been around we have had only 512 people donate to ensure our success. We can no longer operate on drips and drabs for donations and have to have a successful fundraiser or we can no longer operate. We are doing a donor drive where we are asking each person to donate at least $2, this will be our only fundraiser for the remainder of 2019. We have to have at least 8,000 members and/or persons to donate at least $2 in 30 days or we will have to cut programs. The pressure of day to day ensuring we have funds to continue the next day has become untenable and I can no longer continue to operate in this manner. We need you!
Sincerely,
Melissa Anne Dunford
Executive Director and Founder
I get the same comments quite a bit so I thought I would address the ones about why we fundraise!
1. Isn't Facebook free so why do you raise money? Facebook is a social platform that we use to connect with our community, our community that is in a virtual cloud but very powerful in numbers. We started as a FB group but became a business, an organization in 2018 so we could start programs and give back to our community and promote change.
2. What programs do you have that require money? We have our Little Faces program which is the bulk of our budget. This program provides memorial.packages to children which include a pillow made from their lost loved ones shirt, treats for bday and Christmas time. We also display our Wall of Faces and attend events to work towards change. We travel on our own dime and use donated funds for table fees, materials etc. However if we want to have a larger impact we need to start a travel budget as we are all volunteers and do not get paid for the hours we put in.
3. Why should I help, can't you just get a grant? Like every grassroots effort success is measured on the financial support of the community and in order to get a grant one has to show they have community support and what we can accomplish with funds. No one is handing out checks for ideas, you have to build on something hence why we need you.
4. Why should you ask persons with substance use disorder to donate? If we aren't going to take care of own then no one will. Every grassroots effort that has created real.change is because the community took care of its own.
5. Why not just be a FB group and not worry about fundraising? Because I know change will not happen behind a keyboard. This is just a place for us to come together and then work on advocacy that can create real change and advocacy is not free. I cannot work the hours I work and the hours my volunteers put in and do nothing but monitor a group not when this group could be powerful.and truly advocate for changes.
I hope by taking this all in account you will donate to our membership drive at least $2 as without you we do not have an organization and without an organization we do not have this awesome group any longer. I speak plainly as I hope people appreciate the straight talk. It would be nice to wake up and see that thousands of members of the 62k heard our plea, donated at least $2 and we could focus on programs and advocacy.
Perks
I am honored to announce that we have partnered with Spirit Wind Records. This label represents winners of the Native American Grammy Awards and they have recorded a CD in support of awareness of the opioid epidemic. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Faces of Opioids/Little Faces. They used our mosaic for the CD label which you can see below. This is a project that has been months in the making and I am honored we were chosen for such a gift.
