About The Odd Cat.
The Odd Cat is the very first rescue-cat cafe in Bali, in association with Villa Kitty, the only cat shelter on the island. Opened in November 2016, the idea was to have a safe, homelike environment for the rescued cats of Bali and potential adopters to meet. People can come in for a coffee, juice, or some nibbles to enjoy feline company & take home their new best friend.
The Odd Cat Objectives.
The main goal of The Odd Cat is to create the ideal environment for both humans & rescued felines to meet, in order to find forever homes for as many cats as possible. Each adoption allows us to foster & rehabilitate more cats and kittens from our affiliated shelter. Having a homelike environment makes it less stressful for cats than being in a shelter, which brings out their individual personalities. People can come in and spend as much time as they want with the cats, get to know them, and fall in love. We keep the cats’ best interests at center stage by interviewing all potential adopters, to ensure our cats go to the best-suited homes.
The Odd Cat is also a place to spread education, where we offer an experience to learn about cats. We teach about proper cat nutrition, why vaccinations and sterilizations are so important, why cats are amazing pets, why adopting is better than buying, & why Bali cats are such lovable weirdos. We also provide information, such as where to go and who to contact for affordable veterinary care on the island, how to transport cats to other countries, and other useful caretaking tips. We teach people about fostering and provide what is needed when fostering with us.
Why The Odd Cat is So Important.
Visiting Bali, is it not difficult to notice the millions of stray cats roaming the isalnd, combined with a relative lack of education about animal care. We work closely with Villa Kitty, the sole cat shelter of Bali. While they work with as many homeless cats and kittens as possible, the number of those in need is often overwhelming. The Odd Cat extends the amazing work of Villa Kitty by providing a less overwhelming environment for felines and people looking to adopt.
The Odd Cat has rescued 170 cats & kittens, plus 2 puppies, and we are proud to have matched 82 to their loving forever homes, to date.
Over time, we have also started our own rescue & foster community as wll. We now have a small network of foster homes for new rescues, keeping the cats & kittens safe & loved until they are fully vaccinated. We teach how to bottle-feed, so more kittens will can be saved. We also organize sterilization days by partnering with Bali Pet Crusaders, so that reduced-price or free sterilizations are provided.
A New Location.
Our current lease is coming to an end, which provides for a opportunity to grow & improve, so that we can save even more Bali cats. In the past 2 years, experience has taught us a great deal, and many original ideas have developed to make the cafe more suitable for both cats and the people visiting. We want to further expand our horizons, implement our invaluable experience, and create an even better place for cats & people to fall in love.
We have learned to create a proper separate space for cats who are sick or recently rescued, to provide the healthiest environment for cats & humans alike.
We learned in our first year that our adopters wanted a place they trusted to care for their adopted rescue cats when they need to leave the island temporarily. This led to adjusting our space to also provide a safe & fun boarding facility.
We will separate our new space into different areas: The cafe for drinks & food, the adoption area, a room for sick cats & recent rescues, and the boarding facility.
Our Goals.
While we search for a larger, ground floor space with a garden, we envision a dream home for cats, with hammocks & beds to rest, shelves & cat trees to climb, tunnels & toys to play, and a comfortable space for people to visit. We would also like to have space ready to receive more people when organizing events.
In the new facility, our goal is to become financially independent. The best way for us to do so is through the boarding facility. We would like to expand the size of our boarding area, have larger space available for each cat, and provide a common area for the cats to play & relax, as an extension of their homes.
What We Need.
We ask that you join us in providing a new & improved space for us to save the cats of Bali, as well as educate to improve the lives of all animals on the island.
We are raising $6,000 USD, which will allow us to pay 1 year upfront for our new location's rent, build each area to provide a comfortable & healthy space for cats & humans, and allow us to expand our adoptions & education efforts.
