Dzunuk'wa Society hasn't added a story.
The Dzunuk'wa Society, is asking you to Stand With Us to protect the sacred. Our mission, to end all Old Growth logging of ancient forests & reconnect to their ancient teachings for the next 7 generations & beyond.
The ancient temperate rainforests are irreplaceable Old Growth forests located in so-called British Columbia.
We are committed to preserving all our old growth cut blocks from BC Timber Sales. We won’t stop until all ancient forests are protected & once again honoured as our ancestors did before us.
The Dzunuk'wa Society was founded by three women with Indigenous roots (along with Elder Bill Jones, friends and allies). We began to work together during the Ada’istx/Fairy Creek Blockade to protect the sacred lands of Pacheedhat Elder Bill Jones on his unceded traditional territory.
Our old growth forests are WORTH MORE STANDING as it is the old growth that provides the oxygen we breathe and contributes as a major role in the temperature gage on mother earth which provides medicines and foods for all creatures for both present and future. These ancient forests allow the earth to thrive and support a healthy ecosystem.
Indigenous wisdom understands this sacred balance of life. The time has come where we must see humans as equal to nature, to see our tree people and all life as our relatives. We must begin to see the balance of the circle of life. We must learn to only harvest what we need and to only harvest in balance & respect with the eco-systems. We as humans are here to protect these sacred eco-systems. These teachings are rooted in the wisdom of natural & Indigenousaw. This wisdom holds the key to our future.
The current system is built on short-term industry profit. Nature is seen as a commodity. These actions have only brought our civilization into the shadows of our deepest, collective nightmares. on Aug 9th 2021 A Code Red emergency was declared by the United Nations.
We cannot continue this capitalist greed and colonial mindset or we will face our own extinction, we must remember the balance. The current system is destroying the earth's natural cycles at a rapid rate- our lands, forests, waters, air, and the future of the children are in danger.
Many nations are speaking up to protect their sacred lands and speak out against these atrocities. When the Government allows these type of actions by industry to take place it dishonours the intention of the UN Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) It denies the First Nations their indigenous sovereignty and their connection to their use of natural law.
The Dzunuk'wa Societies indigenous voice and perspective opens doors & hearts. We look to engage further with other First Nations & co-conspirators fighting to protect our sacred lands. We are reaching out and engaging with a wide diversity of potential allies, working partners & fellow Mother Earth Guardians. Meeting with the federal/ provincial governments and individuals, establishing relationships with important members of our growing Network. We look to build bridges…working towards the RainbowNation.
WHAT WE HAVE DONE AND ARE CURRENTLY DOING
We are creating a joint strategy with environmental groups. We have spoken with Mosaic Forest Management to discuss what it will take to permanently defer remaining Oldgrowth logging in their licensed areas.
We have written two petitions, it was reported that BC was using raw timber in primary forests to create wood pellets for DRAX UK, and a formal complaint to the Canadian competition board was made by the Green Party of Canada.
We attended the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) which took place in December in Montreal. Our team brought a piece of a mother tree to the conference to draw global attention to the biodiversity crisis occurring from logging in our forests. We sang songs and held ceremonies around her, she bled her sap in the eyes of those who came to meet her. Many cried and began to deepen their personal connection to the sacred elder old growth trees. They understood why we need to reform and change our current logging industry. Our ceremonial drums were seen as weapons and were confiscated by the UN security. Now an investigation is being undertaken by the United Nations to hopefully undue the damage done again against our culture & way of life.
Our work continues with outreach into communities needing urgent help to save their forests and education to help communities to better understand the issues and options available.
We are also organising a "Summit for the Trees".
We have also embarked on a nationwide screenings and speaking panels tour of an award winning documentary REMATRIATION. The tour started in February in Victoria BC. It has been screened over 10 times including at the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples Climate Summit in Ottawa. Our three stop tour starts in the Yukon the first week of March. These screenings are taking place on Reserve in major towns and cities. Our intention with these screenings and talking panels is to grow our circles and gather our tribe.
We are assisting in the release of Tokitae our stolen sister, an Orca that has been held in captivity in the smallest 'pen' for 50 years
We have developed a working relationship with the Congress of Aboriginal People and help to unite and support off reserve Natives
This is grassroots activism and we need your help. Funding is needed for us to continue our current activities of building bridges and meeting with industry and Nations.
With the current talk and log attitude of our governments.
We are the change
Will you help us?
