For a small non-profit, Nazareth House Apostolate (NHA) has been accomplishing big things, bit by bit. We move forward tackling one need at a time. Each month we provide food, housing, medical attention and education to hundreds of people in the villages of Sierra Leone. As the needs of the people increase and the area of those we serve increase we find it almost impossible to continue without an automobile of our own. Our director, James Mansaray, in Sierra Leone must rent taxies at increasing higher prices to make the round trip from Kabala to Freetown to pick up the medical supplies and essentials to provide aid to the villagers living in extreme poverty. The cost of car rental is one thing, but then there is the fact that the drivers are unreliable and most of the time very wreckless. Their concern is more fares so they drive fast and unsafe to get from one faregiver to the next in the quickest manner they can. It is a common sight along the road from Kabala to Freetown to see road accidents ...and lives lost. Not only are the drivers unsafe but the vehicles themselves are not properly maintained. A ride in a taxi is a definite risk. NHA is very uncomfortable putting James at this continued risk. We've been fortunate so far, but not free from accident. If you remember several years ago James was involved in a terrible wreck caused by a speeding driver. We could have lost him. Not only are we losing valuable funds by paying taxis and car rentals - funds that could be used to help those in need - but we are unable to bring supplies to villages in the far upcountry. These are the ones who need us the most. A motorcycle can't haul the supplies, a four-wheel drive vehicle will. We aren't asking for a new car (of course that would be nice) but a simple all-wheel drive car capable of hauling people and supplies to those in need. A car safe enough for James to make the trip back and forth to Freetown. We really need to provide James with a car to do the work he so selflessly does for NHA. He puts himself in danger every time he gets into an unsafe unmaintained vehicle with a driver that may or may not drive carefully. But James ignores the risks to provide for those less fortunate. He places himself amongst disease to bring medical attention to the ill, he makes many trips by motorbike long distances carrying many loads of supplies back and forth to villages, he works so hard and doesn't complain. Its nothing for him to receive a knock at the NHA Compound door asking him to run a sick or injured person to the hospital - he only has a motorbike to do this. There is so much need and we are changing the lives for the better for so many. We can't hold back, be bold with us - take the steps needed to do whatever we can to help the people we serve in Sierra Leone. Our goal is not to be forever providing aid but to give to them the stages and steps that help them to provide for themselves. This is why we build the school - to provide education, grow the food - to feed the hungry, use local merchants - to stimulate the economy. It all must begin with the basics and transportation is a basic need to do the work we do. Please help us out today. Give a few dollars for a car - not just any car but a car that will deliver love throughout Kabala and other areas of Sierra Leone. Thank you.
