Oceanites, a non-profit environmental, scientific and educational organization founded by Ron Naveen in 1987 sees global climate through an Antarctic lens.
Oceanites provides science-based data showing a strong correlation between the Antarctic Peninsula’s warming trend and declining numbers of the Adélie and chinstrap penguins.
These penguins truly are “canaries in the climate change coal mine” and Oceanites is uniquely positioned to positively shape conservation of these indisputably beguiling animals as well as public awareness nationally and internationally of climate change and its impacts.
Since 1994, Ron, the world's foremost "Penguin Counter," and his Oceanites team have been traveling to the vast Antarctic Peninsula region (where it’s warming faster than anywhere else on Earth except the Arctic) “counting penguins” and studying the effects of climate change.
Oceanites needs your help to continue doing this important and expensive work.
For 23 years, Oceanites has relied to some extent on government funding and occasional grant support, but increasingly, it requires public support — from people like you! — to keep this seminal work going. Ron and his team are on the “front lines” where:
- Temperatures in winter have risen a staggering 9 degrees
- This past year the sea ice cover was down by over 66,000 square miles
- Adélie penguins have declined by 70% and chinstrap penguins up to 50%
Everything Oceanites does is based upon its “on-the-ground” penguin-counting research and travel to and from Antarctica is expensive. Oceanites returns to Antarctica in December 2017 for three months of sustained work during the penguin breeding season – but we need funding to ensure that all intended counting is accomplished,
