Who we are: Dr. Erin Downes & Dr. Jay Rowan. Husband & Wife, Veterinarians & Owners for over 20 years of Paoli Vetcare, an animal hospital on the Philadelphia Main Line since 1949. We are the parents of two college-aged boys & three dogs, three cats, a miniature donkey, a dove, three ducks, three roosters, three hens & three baby chicks.

Our Veterinary Practice: We treat all pets as if they are our own. Stop in to check out Dr. R's collection of veterinary medical antiques and vintage advertising featuring dogs & cats. You may find him down on the floor to examine a big dog. We want your fur-baby to be as comfortable as possible while receiving the highest quality of vet care.

Our Mission: The overwhelming suffering of humans & animals in the hurricane-ravaged areas of Texas inspired us to find a way to increase the number of pets saved, reunited & placed in loving homes.

The Problem: It is complicated and expensive to move animals across state lines. The logistics of out-of-state pet adoptions are so prohibitively difficult that even though people in Pennsylvania  are willing to contribute to the disaster response by adopting pets, relatively few adoptions are completed.

Our Solution: Build a BRIDGE between needy pets in the Hurricane Harvey disaster zone & and loving Pennsylvania families.

The Plan: 

• Paoli Vetcare is partnered with Texas Rescues to facilitate out-of-state adoptions of pets in need of relocation.

• Pennsylvania families can choose a pet based on photos, videos & biographies posted on our partner rescue's website. Families can talk with a pet's foster family to ensure a good match.

• The process of adopting a healthy, vaccinated, neutered, microchipped and well-socialized pet is completed directly with the Texas Rescue.

• Paoli Vetcare will handle the logistics of housing, medical care & transport.

• Adoptive parents will pick up their new fur-babies at Paoli Vetcare!

Why Donate: Your contribution will help in two ways:

1. You can fund the transportation of an adopted pet from foster care in Texas to a forever home in Pennsylvania.

2. A pet adopted to Pennsylvania frees up a place in Texas to care for a desperate pet hoping to reunite with the family they lost during the hurricane.

Our Goal: Increase the number of pet adoptions out of the disaster zone enabling the local rescues to concentrate their resources on two critical and pressing needs:

1. Search, rescue, medical care & housing of pets until they can be reunited with their families.

2. Prepare relinquished & abandoned pets for adoption.

The Best Part: A small donation will make large impact! When giving, we all want the most bang for our buck. You know your contribution will help directly, not pay overhead expenses. Donations will fund the significantly discounted transportation  fee of $50/pet. We have found the cost is typically 10 times that! 

The Details: Shockingly, the US does not have a government agency or non-profit organization that launches a coordinated response to address the needs of pets, livestock & wildlife impacted by a disaster. Until FEMA includes an Incident Command Structure for animals, our country relies on the hundreds of thousands of volunteers that scramble to respond when disaster strikes. An Herculean effort by a diverse ensemble of individuals & groups address the mind-boggling array of challenges a disaster presents for animals. Animal needs parallel those of humans and include:

• pre-disaster education, planning & operations

• disaster search & rescue

• temporary housing, feeding & care

• veterinary care, medicine, surgery, vaccinations

• animal diseases that infect humans

• capturing stray and escaped animals

• relocation & adoption of homeless animals

Don't Worry: Lost pets will not be eligible for adoption. We do not want to separate even one pet from their family. The animal rescue community has learned from past disasters that rescued animals need to be held locally to give their families a chance to claim them. Rescues & Shelters now keep pets for at least 30 days before starting the process that will eventually make them eligible for adoption. This is why it is so important right now to relocate as many adoptable pets as possible. When you adopt one pet you give another pet a second chance!
