Why Feed the Llamas?
The Llama Sanctuary is the largest dedicated camelid rescue organization in North America, currently caring for around 60 rescued llamas and alpacas.
| Eddie's StoryEddie arrived at The Llama Sanctuary in October 2023, wrapped in a mass of dreadlocks that hung down to the ground. Underneath the stinking mess of felted fibre he was just skin and bone. With virtually no muscle mass left, he could barely walk and was severely depressed. Nine months later he has a new lease of life. Careful nurturing and high quality feed restored his strength, so much so that he developed an ‘eye’ for Gemmy, a young outcast alpaca who was born blind. Following her around all day has helped Eddie to rebuild his leg muscles and a beautiful cameli romance was kindled that has touched the hearts of many and even caught the attention of CBC News.
Eddie’s story is just one among the 60 resident llamas and alpacas who call The Llama Sanctuary home and feeding this number requires a lot of planning and money. Summer is the time to secure the very best hay.

56,000lbs Hay Needed
Over the next few weeks The Sanctuary must find and pay for around 56,000lbs of hay and silage, at an estimated cost of $13,000. This should be sufficient to carry the llamas through the coming winter and spring. Also, in 2 months time, we will need to order 3000lbs of various bagged feed to provide the essential nutrients and extra calories for the many elderly and malnourished animals in Sanctuary care.

A Big Effort
We appeal to you to help find the $13,000 required to buy the winter hay. And if you have the kind of hay we are looking for, we welcome donations of hay!
We have 20 bales of oat silage arriving next week;
We need to find around 400 small square bales of high quality, 2nd and 3rd cut mixed grass hay;
We Need an additional 24 large round bales of grass and oat hay
Since last winter, The Llama Sanctuary has taken in an additional 16 llamas and alpacas and we know of a number of others who will most likely come into Sanctuary care soon.
