The Miskitos Cays are made up of around 76 formations of keys, mangrove islets, estuaries, reefs, and marine grasslands. With an approximate area of 27 km², it is the main part of a larger area declared in 1991 as a Marine Biological Reserve and Coastal Strip, (It includes the Miskitus keys and the coastal strip including lagoons from the community of Cabo Gracias in the extreme north of the Caribbean Nicaraguan, municipality of Waspam, bordering Honduras, up to Wounta in the south of the Puerto Cabezas municipality is also listed as a RAMSAR site.
This tropical paradise has an incredible biology, it is the direct livelihood of some eight thousand families of indigenous artisanal fishermen, dedicated to fishing and / or capturing mainly wild lobster (Caribbean spiny lobster), queen snail, sea cucumber and scale.

I am Cesar Paiz Rodriguez, president of the Ki Waska Auhnira Cooperative (COMUKIWAS), we represent 685 direct workers from the sea and we are raising funds for the reconstruction of our homes and the reactivation of artisanal fishing.
