There are families who home school because they believe the public school system doesn’t understand or help their exceptional child(ren). This campaign helps to raise funds for the Howard County Homeschooling Co-op, which offers parents an alternative.

A Revolution

I never dreamed I'd be a homeschooling Mom - partly because I didn't want the scrutiny or to be seen as some extremist raising academic nerds void of social skills.  But nowadays the face of homeschooling is changing.  Whereas, once homeschoolers consisted of stepford wives-esque, stay-at-home Moms, it now boasts lawyers, doctors and former teachers in its ranks.

Over the past 30 years, teaching one‘s children at home rather than entrusting their education (and well-being) to the public school system has exploded - around 10,000 children were homeschooled in the early 80's - today, more than 2 million children are homeschooled.  Although currently only 4% of the population, experts predict an exponential boom within the next 7-10 years.

My Story

There are different reasons why people homeschool their children - from refusing to subject their kids to the stress and confusion associated with Common Core, to parents not able to afford private school or daycare.  For me personally, the decision came 4 years ago, when my (then) 3 year old son was told by some random child on the playground, that he couldn't play because he was "Black". The thought of having to explain racial prejudice to a 3 year old was heartbreaking, and I instinctively wanted to protect him from that element of society.

At first I wasn’t sure if I could even teach my child; much less organize a school schedule and stick to it.  Plus I had lots of questions and found it difficult to find any organized, local, support groups to help lead me down the right path.  So after many months of research and grassroots organizing, we began the homeschooling co-op to service the need in our community.

Why Care

Homeschooling isn’t the right choice for everyone.  But for those who choose to homeschool, let's protect their right to do so.  Courts in states like Virginia, Conneticut and California are ruling that parents have no federal or state constitutional right to homeschool their children and that they risk criminal prosecution in doing so.

Even if you don't homeschool your children, please help us eradicate the age-old bias against home education.  Your tax-deductible contribution will fund the operation of a non-profit, homeschooling co-op servicing over 80+ Maryland families.  Thanks for supporting our cause - helping to shape the minds of tomorrow's future.
