Nonprofit club Hout Bay United Football Community in Cape Town,
South Africa, has become way more than just a football club. Operated
as a Trust and situated in one of the most diverse and unequal
communities in the country, the Club has come to represent unity,
friendship and a common purpose among its rainbow of players and
supporters.
We run programmes for people with disabilities; a "halfway house" for young adults coming out of difficult home situations; community cleanups; and various education programmes.
During the Coronavirus lockdown, the players at HBUFC, enabled by partners, raised money for and personally distributed over 3 million meals.
Despite using a ground shared by over 50 teams, HBUFC has been promoted to the national third division, and the dream of playing in the Premier Soccer League is on track, but to do so the club desperately needs a training ground.
Large parcels of land are rare in this community, and we have found a perfect property, big enough to build a full size grass pitch and smaller 5-a-side fields for both HBUFC and the broader Hout Bay football community. It will also have accommodation for players in challenging living situations, and offices for our staff, which will double up as classrooms for those pursuing adult education. If we can reach our goal, all this will be covered and we can change thousands more lives in Hout Bay!
