The Board of Trustees of the Environmental Health Foundation of Canada, the Charitable Division of the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors has set a 2024 goal to raise $10,000. The Board has decided on the following projects to support financially through your generous donations. You can request how you would like us to use your donation. Details are below.
Student Bursary to Attend the CIPHI National Annual Education Conference (AEC):
Since 2010, the EHFC Board has sponsored 101 students to attend the National CIPHI AEC, totaling $24,780 in financial support, thanks to our donors and Baoard fundraising. The Board of Trustees approves annually a $5,000 bursary (if funds are raised) to financially support students or new graduates from the CIPHI accredited schools to attend the CIPHI National Annual Education Conference. The bursary is awarded to CIPHI students on a first come first serve basis to cover the cost of the "early bird" student registration fee. The cost for travel and accommodations is the responsibility of the students. This bursary has resulted in a positive outcome for the recipients in that the majority are able to secure field placement training and/or full-time job offers.
Rotary Club Aquabox Project:
The EHFC Board have partnered again this year to support Stratford (ON) Rotary Club Aquabox Project. Disasters such hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods & fire seem to be increasing in frequency and severity around the world. They leave behind damaged infrastructure and contaminated water supplies. People resort to drinking any water they can find, usually from polluted sources. Those who drink this unsafe water are at increased risk from water-borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. The elderly and very young are particularly vulnerable. Production and distribution of AQUABOX which is a simple, low-cost filtration system that can provide purified drinking water to a family of five for up to a year. It uses silver-impregnated ceramic cartridges capable of filtering 15 litres of polluted water in each fill, trapping virtually 100% of harmful bacteria and protozoan cysts.
The AQUABOX is made from locally sourced components, and is assembled here in Stratford by dedicated volunteers, so there are NO administration costs. A basic hygiene kit is also packed in each unit. Global Medic, a non-profit disaster response organization of paramedics and first responder volunteers, distributes the AQUABOX units globally to those most in need, including disaster-stricken areas of Latin America, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia. The cost of each box is $30 to produce so the $3,000 donation from the EHFC in 2023 resulted in the production of 100 of the 504 boxes through the generosity of our donors. COMMIT Eco Stove Project
COMMIT is a committee of the Rotary Club of Stratford, Ontario, Canada. This committee, was born after a team of dedicated volunteers, mostly from the medical field in Southwestern Ontario, ventured into the second poorest country in Central America, Nicaragua. While there we saw the needs firsthand and through working together with the local government have been able to improve the lives of many individuals and communities. COMMIT will be working together with Stove Team International to build up to 750 eco-friendly stoves over the next 3 years. These stoves are at least 50% more efficient in saving carbon and greenhouse gases and will improve the health of the people using them, especially the women and small children who are constantly around them. These stoves are referred to as Justa stoves- they employ rocket elbow technology and are insulated and have a smoke stack venting to the outside. They will replace the present open fire cooking stoves that are so inefficient and detremental to the health of the users.
