Intro 

Hello, World! We're a tiny international game design team. 

We're building an open-source, privacy-preserving, network game for schools. 

It's a big project! We're working on it part-time at a small team pace.

This project is in active development and not yet released.

We're committed to the long game.

Overview 

When launched, Hello World Jam will host an interactive online Hello Globe (early-stage simulation).

The Hello Globe will display a self-organizing anonymous network-building game being played by partner schools. 

As schools collaborate to expand the anonymous network, the game will publish data on their decision-making processes. 

The data is voluntarily provided by the schools, and will be minimized, de-intentified, and optionally geo-spatially masked. 

Transparency 

This project's v 1.0 specs, designs, methodology, and source code will begin to be released as Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0.

Anonymous participation data voluntarily donated to the game by participating schools will be released to the public (license TBD). 

Project updates will be published through this Fundrazr campaign page. 

School participation 

Participation in the game will be free for schools, email-based, low-pressure, and low time commitment. 

We will never reach out directly to contact a school that has not already joined the game. 

Schools can leave the game at any time by verifiable request from the school. 

School participation can be public or confidential. 

Our Privacy Policy promise

We will never knowingly collect or retain information of individuals below the Age of Majority, under any circumstance.

We will never knowingly collect or retain information of individuals above the Age of Majority, without informed consent.

We will publicly disclose the types of information we collect -- when, from whom, and for what essential purpose.

We will collect and retain public contact information of organizations currently participating in the platform.

We will collect and retain public contact information of organizations recently invited to join the platform.

We will delete information we collect of individuals or organizations upon their documented request.

We are in the research and proof-of-concept phase.

Cost of living in the Philippines

Our monthly goal is calculated based on covering one third of a very modest living wage for a family of four in Davao City. (also see here).

It's important to mention that ICT professionals in the Philippines pay essentially the same price for computers (and other imported equipment and software licenses) as their counterparts in Canada. We often assume "off-shore development" means paying somebody a small fraction of the rate we'd pay here, and that's considered a good living there -- but it's not nearly that simple. And in any case, we believe that work done should not be valued entirely on where the worker lives, but on the value of the work they have done.
