DEFINITELY DALI PROJECT 2019

PLANTING THE SEEDS

The Definitely Dali Project was first introduced to Vancouver in 2014, as a means to expose Vancouverites to exciting, historic, world class, fine art. The mandate of the Project is to ensure that new and future generations may continue to experience the magic of the great Spanish Surrealist master, Salvador Dali.

The beginnings of the project saw several original, gallery sized, Salvador Dali sculptures exhibited in a gallery setting. Viewing of the exhibition has always been presented with no charge to the public.

Encouraged by the positive response, both the size and popularity of the exhibition grew over the next two years.

“TIME” TO GROW

In 2017, an exciting opportunity presented itself! In addition to the smaller sculptures, we were able to facilitate the loan and transportation of a much larger, bronze sculpture of the iconic, Salvador Dali melting clock. A very public downtown location was secured and Dance of Time welcomed everyone at the entrance to Lot 19 from May to October 2017. Standing at nearly 7 feet tall, the 860 lb sculpture was a sight to behold!

With the overwhelming response from both locals and visitors, we were encouraged to double our efforts and in May of 2018, two new Dali sculptures arrived in Vancouver. Over a million people visited the magnificent, golden, Woman Aflame as she stood proudly at Lot 19 for over 6 months.

Meanwhile, the quirky and elegant Surrealist Piano welcomed admirers at the entrance to the new exhibition of both gallery sized sculptures and original graphic works by Salvador Dali, all FREE to the public!

Fast forward to 2019, with plans underway to bring two new monumental sculptures to the people of our beautiful city. An original Dali statue titled Space Venus has been chosen to grace the featured spot at Hornby and West Hastings this year. Towering over Lot 19 at a height of 12 feet, this monumental sculpture is enigmatic and grandiose and oozes with classical femininity!

  
HERE WE GROW AGAIN

This year, a new location has been added to the scope of the Definitely Dali Project! Starting mid-May 2019, a new Vancouver street corner will come alive with the swirling, lacy skirts of the fabulous Dalinian Dancer. This elegant, Flamenco dancing sculpture will greet visitors in a little plaza at Alberni and Thurlow streets through-out the sunny, summer months.

  
THE SURREAL FACTS

After boarding the ship in Italy, the two sculptures will travel across the vast, Atlantic Ocean, transit the historic Panama Canal, graze the coasts of Central America and Mexico, skim the California coastline and finally sail along the West Coast and into the Port of Vancouver.

Before completing their journey in early May, the two sculptures will have traveled over 20,000 kilometers. That's not only a l-o-n-g journey, but a co$tly one too!

LET’S NOT DILLI-DALI

Up until now, we were able to cover the transportation costs for the sculptures coming in from Europe. This year however, the costs are dramatically higher due to the greater size and weight of the artwork.

INTRODUCING THE "ART IN THE CITY FOUNDATION"

As the Definitely Dali Project grows, so the scope of the responsibilities expands. This means the framework of the project has reached a new level which lead to the birth of the non-profit society, called Art in the City Foundation. The mandate of the Foundation is to exhibit world class art in cities' urban areas, with special focus on internationally known artists. The mission is to create free public access to these works of art and to engage individuals and communities to learning more about fine art.
