Forgotten Felines of Maine hasn't added a story.
Sir Edgar Caycee the Brave...that’s the name we gave Edgar after watching him survive and excell after a most often times excruciating year! To say this past year was tough on little Edgar is an understatement. Born with extremely deformed legs Edgar underwent very complicated surgery and manipulation for months in order for him to have working legs and the ability to potty on his own. This is an excerpt from last year’s fundraiser:
”So on Wednesday, February 14th (2018), Edgar will undergo surgery to correct his legs. As the X-rays show Edgar's legs are normal down to the ankle. It's the tendons in the ankles that are causing his knees not to bend correctly. The specialists plan is to cut some of the tendons in the ankles thus releasing the tightness. He could cut all the tendons to make his leg straight but then there would be no tendons to support the ankles. So he is taking a minimalist approach. External fixation will be preformed and Edgar will have pins from the outside place thru the bones in order to construct a straight leg. He will have little gray plastic constructs which will help him bear weight. The specialist said he will look funny but that's ok. For 2-4 weeks Edgar will have the external fixators attached but only until he starts to grow correctly. As the specialist said we are in unchartered waters and while they know the concepts and paths of physiology this case is complicated.”
As we all know Edgar’s 2-4 weeks turned into months but after almost dying in April 2018 from an extremely high fever Edgar was up and mobile in early May 2018. And since May Edgar has continued to grow and thrive. His tendons still weaken at times and in September 2018 his one leg was wrapped for a few weeks to help him gain strength.
So now a year has passed since his external fixators where first surgically attached and Edgar still has ongoing issues which must be addressed. This is a short simple list:
1. Grinds his teeth
2. Inner ear infection with head tilt
3. Right eye moves off center often
4. Never neutered...has only one testicle that is cryptorchid
6. Edgar continues to live on human jarred baby food refusing to eat cat food
7. Edgar’s back toenails do not retract causing him to constantly get foot caught in carpet
8. Both legs kick out at times when Edgar walks due to last of tendon strength
9. Severe PTSD
So now is the time to address these ongoing and sometimes stressful issues. On Wednesday, February 20th, Edgar will be seeing his internist Dr Ternes at The Feline Hospital in Salem, MA. She will continue to address his issues unrelated to his legs. Our hope is that after all blood work and such that he can finally have his shots. Whether neutering will happen is unknown. On Thursday, February 21st Edgar will see his surgeon Dr Yeh at Angel Memorial in Boston. He will examine Edgar’s legs and take x-rays and address all issues related to his back legs.
Edgar is alive and happy because of YOU! His medical costs far outweigh FFoM’s financial means but you all wanted Edgar to live and he did thanks to all of you! Now he needs to continue on his journey to well being. We hope we can extend his life by addressing these ongoing and sometimes stressful issues and we are hoping we can count on you once again! We cannot just ignore these issues...it’s not how we operate. Our dedication to Edgar and all the cats we save is lifelong. So please help us once again to help this little boy who gives us so much joy! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts! ❤️
