Tasunka Ohola Boosters hasn't added a story.
The young people from Bridger, SD have been participating in various prayer, memorial and other rides for many years. Our riders begin at young ages developing their relationships with the horses. Our youngest rider, Chaske Johns, is the grandson of LaVae and Hermus Red Horse, is 4 years old and began riding with his grandpa, almost as soon as he could walk.
In addition to horses they have trained for others, our riders raise and train their own horses. In the past few years they have trained around 20 horses. Many of them are rescue horses that had been abused and deemed by some to be "unridable." Our young people have yet to meet a horse they can't train.
Our youth are rich in spirit. The riders came together more than 10 years ago to support each other and ride as an alternative to drugs, alcohol and suicide. They started with just 2 boys and their uncle. They have worked for and earned everything they have. Some of the riders don't have much. To support our young riders we, the parents and grandparents of the riders have formed a Booster organization to help raise funds.
The money we raise through food sales, 50/50 raffles, here on Fundrazr and other events will be used to help the riders care for their horses by providing hay, feed and equipment, tack and other supplies needed for the horses as well as assistiance with food, transporation, equipment and lodging when needed for the various rides and other horse related activities they participate in throughout the year.
The very next ride will be in December when they ride to Wounded Knee to honor their ancestors most of whom perished in the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890, as well as those that survived and settled the CRST communities of Bridger, Red Scaffold and Cherry Creek. They will spend the next several weeks preparing for the annual pilgrimage that follows the passage taken back in 1890 as the Massacre victims fled from the 7th Cavalry.
Most of the riders are decscendants of the survivors of the Wounded
Knee Massacre.
We will also list money raised through food sales and 50/50
raffles as offline contributions.
