The Cole Harbour Rural Heritage Society has been collecting, preserving, and protecting Cole Harbour’s cultural and natural heritage for 40 years. A community response to the rapid change from rural to urban landscape, the Society continues to champion this once prosperous agricultural community and bring its story to life at the Cole Harbour Heritage Farm Museum, an original 200 year old farm.
Over the last 40 years we've worked with the community to develop an understanding of plants, animals and farming both in a heritage context and also in a working context. This is done through the garden and animals kept on sight during the summer months. The garden at The Farm grows plants, vegetables and fruit which would have originally been grown in Cole Harbour. Likewise the animals kept on site are traditional breeds which would have been kept in Cole Harbour 100 years ago.
We rely heavily on community support and volunteers, as admission to The Farm is by donation only.
We believe in imparting a love of and respect for farm animals and the many things they provide for us. This is done in part by giving the animals on site a fantastic quality of life in comfortable, cozy conditions. Our determination to ensure the best conditions for our animals, coupled with keeping the animals in an urban environment leads to higher costs associated with rearing them. Thus we're reaching out for assistance to ensure we can continue providing these animals with the care they deserve.
We would like to raise enough money to feed the animals for the 6 months they are on site and we'd like your help to do it! Every donation counts so anything you're able to give would be much appreciated. A donation as small as $5 will feed one of our calves for a day and $10 will feed one of our ducks or chickens for a full month!
We're hoping to raise $3000 which will allow us to feed all of the animals on site for the season. Anything beyond that will go to helping with other costs associated with the animals such as vet bills.
Everyone who donates $100 or more will be listed as one of our 2016 Animal Benefactors. Their names will go on a sign which will be hung on a wall in the barn where our animals are housed.
