The Llama Sanctuary hasn't added a story.
Moving house is rated among the top most stressful events in life. Now add to that the task of transporting more than 40 large animals, many of whom are elderly, crippled or require special care, together with a mountain of tools, equipment and feed necessary to provide that care. And perform that gargantuan task THREE times in only nine months! That is what The Llama Sanctuary, the managers David and Lynne and all the llamas have been through over the last year.
What we do.
Operating in British Columbia since 2005, The Llama Sanctuary is the largest dedicated camelid rescue organization in North America, responding to calls for assistance in incidents involving llamas and alpacas; providing a rescue, rehabilitation, retirement and re-homing service and creating a nurturing environment for animals requiring long-term care.
The Sanctuary typically provides year-round care for between 40 and 60 llamas and alpacas and offers evacuation assistance for camelids requiring a temporary home in emergency situations.
The Llama Sanctuary operates from the Recline Ridge Ecopark in Tappen, British Columbia.
Why we need your help:
In June 2022 The Llama Sanctuary received Notice to vacate the property it had been renting, a place believed to be the Forever Home for so many llamas and alpacas in Sanctuary care; With property prices through the roof and farm rentals almost non-existent, The Llama Sanctuary was forced to accept unsuitable, short term rental offers; After relocating the entire Sanctuary, including more than 40 resident llamas and alpacas, twice within a few months, an offer was received to join a brand new venture at Recline Ridge Ecopark in Tappen, British Columbia - https://reclineridgeecopark.com ***Eddie (pictured here) is just one of the many llamas and alpacas received and cared for each year***
A New EraA lease was secured for a portion of the 160 rural acres of The Ecopark and in May of 2023 the entire Llama Sanctuary and all the animals were moved once again. The task of rebuilding begins! The Ecopark is a blank canvas. Barns, special care units, hay storage and a visitor facilities must all be built anew; a lot of rotten barbed wire fencing and thorn bushes need to be removed and replaced with 10,500 feet of ‘llama-proof’ fencing. Water lines have to be trenched, power lines installed and building sites levelled. The managers David & Lynne, on call for the llamas 24/7, live onsite in an RV. |
So much we’ve done – so much to do!
Since May 2023 we have built seven llama shelters, almost entirely from materials salvaged from the old Llama Sanctuary.
Take a look at what we have achieved:
This is what still needs to be done before the snow arrives:
Being Prepared - The Llama Sanctuary must always be prepared for a sudden influx of animals in need of care. Presently, there are 14 llamas and alpacas on the Level One list. Level One listing is for those animals that we know of, who are in need of rescue or who will need to come into Sanctuary care.
What You Can DoRIGHT NOW we need your help to buy the building and fencing materials essential to provide cover and protection for all residents at The Llama Sanctuary a great many of whom require special care.
