Save the Harvest.
Right now, across the Okanagan, farmers are looking at fields and coolers full of beautiful food they worked all season to grow.
Food that should have been sold at busy markets, served in local restaurants and carried home by visitors.
But the wildfires have changed everything.
| Road closures, cancelled markets, lost sales and fewer visitors have left farmers with crops ready to harvest and nowhere for them to go. After months of planting, watering, weeding and hoping, they now face the possibility of watching that food go to waste. We can’t replace everything that has been lost. But we can help save what is still here. Spearheaded by Chef Ned Bell and farmer Thomas Tumbach of LocalMotive Farmers Network Cooperative, the Summerland Sauce Project is bringing farmers, chefs and neighbours together to turn local crops into something that can feed our community and support farmers through this difficult time. LocalMotive will purchase crops directly from farmers in meaningful volumes. Local chefs will donate their time and talent to transform them into seasonal sauces and preserves. Each support level includes one 1-litre container, with additional containers available for $25. Every batch will be different depending on the harvest, ranging from savoury tomato sauce to seasonal fruit compote. Containers will be chilled, frozen and available for pickup on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at LocalMotive Low-Waste Market. Every container represents food that didn’t go to waste and a farmer who was paid for their harvest. Additional funds raised will be distributed to farmers who have lost so much in the Bald Range Wildfire, including those whose crops have burned or can no longer be used. These funds will help with immediate farm and crop recovery. A donor wall will also be created at the Summerland Food Hub. While the final design is still taking shape, every contribution will be recognized as part of this community effort. Buy a container, or a few. Give a little more if you can. Can you ship my sauce? - No, unfortunately not.
Can I freeze my sauce? - It will be frozen when you pick it up, pop it straight back into the freezer.
I am an evacuee can I pick up my sauce when we return to our homes? - Absolutely, we have a large freezer here and will keep it until you are able to take it home.
I have allergies, will I know what is in it? - For sure, we will have a label with all the ingredients.
