Sugar Swing Community of Jazz operates an incredible arts-oriented facility in Edmonton, AB. We use the facilities to run dance workshops and festivals; it is also used by other arts organizations, non-profits, registered charities, dance groups, families, and various other community groups. It's acclaimed as a beautiful venue, but revenue is tight and we need funds to achieve some really exciting things in the near future.
We are raising funds to upgrade our venue. These are
important, long lasting upgrades that will have a direct impact on our
financial future. They will also help students & staff learn and
function better together, and help customers to use our space.
However, the upgrades are costly. We are hoping our dance community
and supporters would be willing to help us out. Sugar Swing is very
excited for these upgrades, and we would love to have your support!
The biggest investment is to upgrade our safety
systems (doors and fire alarm), which will not only increase
safety, but also enable us to obtain a permanent liquor license and
open up the bar. It will take lots of effort and money, but a license
will, in turn, generate more revenue! This will also enable us to host
more types of events, like concerts, recitals, and live music nights.
The increased revenue will come from responsible drink sales and door
admissions, and this highly requested service will be implemented in a
way that respects our dance culture. Plus, better door hardware and a
fire alarm system will make the ballroom even safer too!
Another major addition to the space is mirrors
and a bicycle rack. Mirrors would help instructors
teach, and for students & performers to learn in different ways. A
bicycle rack would be very helpful to our visitors who cycle. We have
wanted to install these items for a long time! A few more upgrades we
hope to provide: furniture for the offices and staff
rooms; new signage; better
ventilation; touch-ups of painting,
trim & baseboard; shelving and
storage; a dishwasher for cups & glasses.
Although you may give funds freely, you may also choose to take advantage of the really sweet fundraising perks: bar credit, tickets to Solstice or Harvest, dance floor, practice space, venue rental credit... and more on the way! If you have special skills, such as carpentry and finishing, you may also exchange your time for perks as well
We need at least $5000 for safety upgrades, but approximately $12000+ to do it all. Sugar Swing Community of Jazz (2126790 Alberta Ltd) is a registered non-profit and any money received that is not used will be put towards our debts from the initial build-out of the space, or used towards our future events.

Used. Need to work on your tap steps? These portable floors pieces are perfect! They are raised off the floor, which amplifies the sound, and although used, will last a long time. They have been finished, and were previously in use at our last location. Some pieces are more dinged up than others, but all are in fair to good condition and functional. If you just need a decent piece of wood to tap on, and don't mind the looks, then this is for you! These pieces can be put together to make a larger floor. 1-2 pieces work nicely for tap and solo jazz, and 2 for swing dance. Limit 2 per person. NOTE: we do not provide shipping - the boards are 4ft 2in square, and cannot fit inside a car nor most SUVs. It may transport in a truck, roof rack, or family van. If you do not have the means, let us know, we can help you ask around!
