One of Toronto Tabla Ensemble’s goals is to train future generations of professional tabla players in Canada. All local TTE members have studied at the ensemble’s school under artistic director Ritesh Das. The performing ensemble exists because of these tabla players who skillfully practice the North Indian classical artform in performances, collaborations, and recordings. All this training requires qualified teachers and an accessible space to conduct classes.

Funds raised will go towards:

Classroom space
Teachers’ salaries
Instrument maintenance
Class textbooks
Curriculum development

Two recent trainees at the Toronto Tabla Ensemble school have gone on to make significant contributions to tabla in their community. Shamir Panchal and Razak Pirani have been students of Ritesh Das for the last decade and are now active members of the Toronto Tabla Ensemble in concerts and recordings. Both are also teachers at the school with Shamir overseeing the Mississauga branch of TTE and training students who have gone on to perform in the Toronto Tabla Youth Ensemble. Razak has taken on a role in artistic production after being awarded a grant from the Metcalf Foundation in 2017 as an arts intern. If it were not for TTE’s school, neither Shamir nor Razak would have been able to contribute to the flourishing of tabla and North Indian Classical music in their community.

The gap in school expenses is about $500 per month, so our gaol is to raise $6,000 by December 31st, 2018 to cover the school year for 2019.
