Elizabeth came to Hen Harbor after being rescued by an neighbor who could not bear seeing her cruel living conditions. Elizabeth and her sisters lived inside a small shed -- never setting foot outside -- for the past 3 years, their entire lives.
When the 4 hens arrived at Hen Harbor, they were all so happy to finally have room to roam, tons of food, and lots of things to do all day!
But after the adrenaline wore off, it became obvious that something was really wrong with tiny Elizabeth. A veterinary exam confirmed what we'd suspected: reproductive disease that can only be fixed surgically.
The mass of hardened egg material stuck inside Elizabeth's abdomen is displacing her internal organs and causing her a lot of pain. It's also pressing on her air sacs, making it hard for her to breathe.
Elizabeth should have had surgery last week, but financial circumstances forestalled it. With only a few days before her scheduled surgery date, we're desperate to raise the funds in time.
