Sunshine House is a community drop-in and resource centre focusing on harm reduction and social inclusion. We work to provide programming that fulfills people’s social, community, and recreational needs. Participants can come as they are, and are not expected to be “clean” or sober.
VISION: To create a place where people can grow.
VALUES:
Acceptance, Respect, Inclusion, Confidentiality
OUR PROGRAMS:
Drop-In
Our longest-running core program, Drop-In is a twice-weekly afternoon space for community members to come in for a cup of coffee, a meal, conversation and fun activities. All are welcome!
During Drop-In, folks can access harm reduction supplies (condoms, syringes, etc.) as well as laundry machines and bathing facilities.
Like That
Like That is a program that provides a space where people exploring gender and/or sexual identity can gather at Sunshine House for fun, skills building and recreation. It happens Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00-8:30pm
We use “like that” as a colloquial term that is clear without having
to check specific boxes. It is queer without having to be explicit and
it avoids the typical identifiers that may be laced with histories of
oppression and homophobia. “I am ‘like that’. That’s the way it is.”
Gizhiwenimin
Gizhiwenimin is a program that provides supports to refugee claimants who often do not qualify for services in the city.
Brunch
Sundays from 11am-1pm we serve a delicious brunch (think eggs and bacon or sausage with anything from toast to french toast to pancakes, and fresh fruit, with COFFEE of course!) that's open to everyone -- yes, even you! Traditionally we charge $2 with kids 12 and under eating free, but during the pandemic we haven't been sticklers on that.
Additional hours of operation
Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have expanded our hours. We are now also open on Tuesday and Saturday to serve meals and provide harm reduction, laundry and other assistance.
