Pineapple Fields is a community initiative born from the vision of a man I knew only as John "Earth." His dream was to establish a self-sustaining community that would offer everything a person needs to recover from living homeless - shelter, food, training and community. We've expanded on that basic idea and have implemented a full-scale program where the individual is given shelter, meals, identity restoration, educational resources and job training, mental health and addiction referral services, and the opportunity to give back to the community through active, daily participation in the project. We've also implemented a three-tier housing system meant to address the individual need of each person - whether it be short-term and transient shelter, transitional housing or permanent housing for those who will never reintegrate into broader society. The difference with Pineapple Fields is that each community is established on the ecology of the region where the community is located, gardens within the community grow only local non-invasive vegetation, and each service that is offered the individual living at Pineapple Fields can be accessed on-site. Our goal is to create true communities, knowing that one of the most difficult aspects to homelessness is loss of self. Our Resilience Rooms begin that endeavor in our Tier 1 housing unit, providing safety and privacy, lending to healthier sleep and a stronger sense of autonomy, while focusing on health and healing for the resident.
