More info : kavitakatmacmillan.com

Introduced to Kirtan and Hindustani Raga while living in New York city and training to teach yoga, Kavita had the good fortune to be in frequent company & practice with great western Kirtan wallahs Krishna Das, Bhagavan Das & Shyam Das.  At the same time she was introduced to the path of Indian Classical Music and began to study with grammy-nominated composer Michael Harrison.  Deeply moved by this lineage and practice Kavita continued to study extensively in NYC and India with Sri Karunamayee and Ustad Mashkoor Ali Khan.  She now studies Hindustani singing with internationally recognized vocalist, composer and performer Warren Senders.  Kavita is a loved part of the yoga music community and has offered music & collaborated with the Bhakti legends who first introduced her to as well as Jai Uttal, Daniel Paul, Benjy & Heather Wertheimer (Shantala), Steve Gorn, Gina Sala, and so many more beautiful souls.  Kavita offers pranams to her guru Sri Baba Neem Karoli for this unfolding path of grace.

Back story:

A background in theater and dance led Kavita (then Kat ) to yoga however freeing the voice and singing was always the goal.  Kavita loved to sing since she was a very small child and yet, as is so often the case in this culture, she found herself disconnected from her own voice and music as a young adult.  Lost without grounding in her own truth and creative expression, Kavita made the path of opening voice a priority.  Training in yoga to grow and heal it soon became clear that the voice also was affected.  Chanting mantra before and after a physical yoga class the first step.  Discovering Indian Classical music and spending time in the  practice of listening deeply and singing into the drone changed everything.  The reconnection to oneself and the ONE that we are all a part of is profound.  Nada Brahma.  With gratitude to the teachers and lineage of sacred sound, Kavita draws on this tradition to teach and share music with the world.

Similar to the healing Kavita found through her training in Butoh ( a form of dance that came out of post WWII Japan) the experience of energy moving in the body in order to free the spirit and soul is how singing heals and changes us.  We give life to that which is stuck, we give voice to our dreams and sorrows and we open to the flow of life so that it may guide and teach us all we are here to encounter and be.  Kavita's wish with this music, for herself and others, is that it move you to sing and feel... to cry to laugh to let go and be all that you are here to be.  In your truthful and most authentic expression there is so much beauty.

Kavita is known for empowering people  to overcome their perceived blocks to sharing and enjoying music through the unfolding of their unique voice.  A generous, nurturing guide with deep roots in practice, Kavita mentors those looking to become free with their voice, and can be found offering her music at transformational retreats, sacred chant concerts and spiritual festivals internationally.  She is currently based in the Pacific Northwest of the U.S.
