Friends of Gardner Field is a registered 501C3 non-profit seeking to raise $100,000 to revitalize Gardner Field in West Acton Village. Our organization has met with elected officials, directors and managers within the Town of Acton, and folks in professional landscape architecture and park development to devise a path forward for Gardner Field. The playground is obsolete and inaccessible. The field itself is a gem in West Acton and naturally suited to host community events, like the Acton Boxborough Farmers Market but lacks an accessible and viable space to host these events. We hope to change this.
We anticipate a three-phase project that will cost an estimated $1 Million Dollars over the next 5 years. The first phase will consist of paving a rectangular space to serve as a community event space. When the paved space is not used by the community for large events, like the Farmers Market, it will be available to folks visiting Gardner Field and West Acton for parking. In doing this, we would also separate the pedestrian access point from the vehicle access point of Gardner Field, by adding an opening adjacent to the pedestrian crosswalk spanning Mass Ave. The second phase of the project will replace the existing playground equipment with new, accessible, equipment to yield a Universally Designed playspace, welcoming to children and caregivers of all abilities. Finally, phase three (3) will include a Splash Pad for use in the warmer months; a public water feature currently not found in Acton or Boxborough nor many of the surrounding communities.
We need your help to make this happen. We are approaching folks in local and state governments to find funding for this project. Projects like this are most likely to secure this type of funding when supported by applications the community has self-funded to a degree. We are looking for one-time donations from community members and local businesses. With your hopeful donation, we can build a park the community can benefit from now!
