The Mayan Institute Ochoch Hik´eek – which translates as Casa de la Esperanza (House of Hope) is located in Poptún, in the North of Guatemala, in the State of Petén, and opened its doors in 2003. It is non-profit, community-based educative centre, which teaches adolescents and young people, alongside their basic education, about social service and Mayan cultural relevance. These young people, due to historical and geographical reasons, have tended to be excluded from the formal educative process of secondary education.
The main objective of the school is to offer an alternative type of education based on the world view of the Mayan culture, taking into account the reality of local communities, in order to construct a society which is democratic, socially just, multicultural, and environmentally responsible, with its own economic development model.
The institute is based on a study method, which is divided into two phases: “on-site” and “off-site”, which both tend to last 15 days. In the “on-site” phase, the students study intensively within the educational establishment, and when they are “off-site”, they study from home, at a distance, completing the tasks set for them at the school.
