Pavan's mom (the younger woman in the photo) needs surgery to fix a nasty side effect from one of her medications. Pavan stays with us at our children's home, Karunya Mane, and mom Baghya is a single mother from a village about an hour away. Dad abandoned the family a long time ago, and mom struggled to raise her son on her own before letting him come to live at Karunya Mane.

Despite mom's difficulties, she did a good job with her son. Pavan, age 13, is a very sweet boy -- polite, extremely well-behaved, and conscientious beyond his years. The only problem that Pavan had when he came to KM was that he couldn't read or write, even though he was attending 6th grade in the village. So we started him from the beginning, and he now thrives in 7th grade.

Mom does daily wage type work in the village. She diligently visits her son at Karunya Mane every month and calls him every week. She's a good mom.

Mom has some fat that collected on her back (like a "buffalo bump") and she needs surgery to remove it. It's quite uncomfortable for her. Our doctor friend at the nearby clinic will be performing the operation next week. The estimated cost is Rs. 21,000 or about US$325.
