"They're not laying anymore anyway," was the explanation Snow White's former caretaker gave for moving out and leaving behind two hens inside a locked coop.  

We were happy to take in these darling sweet hens, but were concerned about Snow White when she arrived with a shuffling gait and unnaturally upright stance, much like a penguin. The other birds chased her away from the food and she grew very thin. 

The penguin-like stance is a classic symptom of a reproductive disease in chickens. Because she was bred  to lay so many eggs, Snow White's body just wore out. Instead being expelled, the eggs just built up inside her and created a painful, life-threatening situation.

Luckily, she got to us in the nick of time and instead of surgery, a minimally-invasive hormonal implant was able to bring her back to health!    

Here's the catch:  Snow White's implant isn't permanent, and it's expensive. She's months overdue for its renewal and as spring shifts her egg-laying hormones into high gear, it needs to be renewed ASAP. Can you donate a bit to help her get her life-saving implant? 

Three hundred dollars in exchange for many more pain-free years with her feathery friends isn't really a lot! But  on top of the thousands of dollars in vet bills already incurred by our special-needs residents monthly, it's a little overwhelming.

Snow White's implant has been put off repeatedly because funds were needed for other unexpected veterinary-care emergencies. But she can't wait any longer! Without the implant, eggs are going to keep piling up inside her until only an expensive (~ $1200), risky surgery can save her.
