Panorama Destination - Asia World Indonesia hasn't added a story.
The earthquake occurred just as many residents of Palu and nearby Donggala were preparing for Friday prayers. There was also a festival underway on the beach shortly before the tsunami, measuring up to five metres, descended on the shoreline at over 100 mph.
The sudden impact of both disasters, combined with the densely populated configuration of Palu and the surrounding towns, have led to a terrible and widespread loss of life, life-altering injuries, devastation of property and a humanitarian disaster which continues to get worse as the news unfolds. More than 1,400 people have been confirmed dead in the disaster, although this figure is expected to rise significantly in the coming days as more of the areas most severely affected are reached by teams of rescuers.
The impact of the earthquake and subsequent relief efforts have been exacerbated by a phenomenon called ‘liquefaction’, in which soil particles became saturated with water and were churned by tectonic shifts into an enormous, shifting sinkhole. Many survivors in Palu described a ‘land tsunami’, with roads rippling like waves and houses being swallowed suddenly by the ground. Many residents have been buried alive due to this terrifying and sudden disaster, whilst the damage caused is hard to calculate or appreciate unless you see it with your own eyes.
For those who survived the initial quakes and tsunami, a third humanitarian disaster is unfolding, as starvation, disease and homelessness begin to take their toll. There is a severe shortage of food, water, medicine and clothing in Palu, where many people have lost everything they own and an estimated 10,000 have been left homeless. Many children have been separated from their families, whilst the discovery, identification and burial of victims still trapped in the rubble are moving slowly due to difficulties associated with reaching them.
Rescue efforts are ongoing in and around the city of Palu, but more help is urgently needed. The Indonesian army, disaster relief agency and red cross are doing all they can, but the scale of the destruction requires more hands and more funds. Panorama Destination and Asia World Indonesia have set up this fundraising account to raise money to help the victims of the Sulawesi earthquakes and tsunami. Every penny of the funds collected will go directly to aid efforts on the ground in Palu, providing the materials, medicines and support that are most desperately needed.
Thank you for your continued support.
