My name is Demara Austin, and I founded Math Aunty Tutoring and Consulting. I moved to Prince George's County, Maryland, in first grade and attended Seat Pleasant Elementary, Hyattsville Middle, William Wirt Middle, and Bladensburg High Schools. After earning my bachelor's degree in mathematics from St. Mary's College of Maryland and a master's in mathematics from Kansas State University, I returned to Maryland to teach.

In February, I had a vision of operating my tutoring business, Math Aunty, as a nonprofit. A family’s finances can greatly impact a student’s educational trajectory, through property tax funded schools, private schools, and access to private tutors. This creates educational inequality based on income, something that students can’t control. And with the prices of rent and food increasing, keeping students fed and housed is more important to families than making sure they know the quadratic formula. I want to help families who are making the tough decisions between getting their students access to math tutoring they need and living paycheck to paycheck.

This is why I established Math Aunty Tutoring and Consulting: to provide quality one-on-one math tutoring and mentoring to every student who needs it. Everyone can be a mathematician, and every student deserves access to affordable math tutoring.

Tutoring is not just about grades; it's about empowering students with the confidence and problem-solving skills they need for life. I am a tutor-mentor-coach dedicated to building relationships with my students that foster growth, resilience, and joy while learning. Every tutor who joins our team shares this commitment.

I have a vision for success, and two board members are already committed. However, I need your help to bring this vision to life.

I am launching this fundraising campaign to raise $2,820 to cover filing costs for 501(c)(3) status, including a year of mentorship with MD Nonprofits, allowing us to operate as an official nonprofit organization. The additional funding will support marketing, outreach, and a chief development officer search.

Update: I have decided to use LegalZoom for the nonprofit formation process. My first board meeting is scheduled for 12/14/2024. Everything is exciting!
