The Football Foundation for Africa hasn't added a story.
The Problem
The last 30 years have witnessed a massive influx of football communities, mainly academies, throughout the continent. These football communities demonstrate a passion for the game in Africa and the inherent ability to self-organise around sport and work towards youth development and community improvement.
An obvious outcome of the growth of football communities in Africa is the emergence of footballing talent from the continent, many of whom have become world-beaters playing in top leagues. However, real numbers demonstrate that the percentage of youths in football communities who play professionally is a tiny fraction (less than 1%) of young people devoting their time and energy to these institutions.
The situation often leaves young footballers in a precarious position. Some fall prey to illegitimate agents and human trafficking in a desperate attempt to play professionally and escape harsh circumstances in their countries. A good number also get into crime, drug and alcohol abuse and other vices out of frustration and lack of opportunities. The situation is exacerbated because football academies are often run by unqualified personnel with little or no support from governments and national football associations. A few fortunate ones can get by on local or international donations.
Solution
Through AFDN, we plan to transform these football communities into economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable entities, increasing their attractiveness to the government, private investors and international development partners. We aim to achieve Safe, Smart and Sustainable football communities in Africa.
Africa Football for Development Network has established the following four goals:
- Promote excellence in managing grassroots football communities through education on good governance and quality coaching education.
- Economically empower grassroots football communities through upskilling, capacity building and entrepreneurship training.
- Promote environmental sustainability by using football communities for awareness campaigns, fan education, waste management and recycling programmes, and tree planting.
- Grassroots sports diplomacy – promote the transfer and exchange of successful practices between football communities across the continent.
