*If Not Here, Where? A Call to Action for Our Community*
Over the past decade, the City of Regina has experienced a staggering fourfold increase in houselessness, particularly in the Heritage area. Our neighbours are grappling with meeting their basic needs and food insecurity has reached alarming levels. This situation calls for immediate action. Central to our campaign is the former Trinity Lutheran Church which currently presents a unique opportunity. This location provides essential services and meal programs for those in need but it stands at a critical juncture.
The community has proposed a solution to these pressing issues. The Hawk Principle Community Service Cooperative, in collaboration with local grassroots organizations, is dedicated to transforming the former church into a vibrant community hub. This space will continue vital meal programs, such as the TLC Pantry, and will also expand its services to address these complex needs of food insecurity and houselessness. It will be a safe haven where everyone can access essential resources, share their stories and foster connections. The pressing question is: If not here, WHERE?
Our efforts have been hindered by provincial neglect that have limited our access to critical federal resources. There is an opportunity for change with the new Regina city council working with federal representatives to secure these funds. However, we are advocating for immediate action and cannot afford to wait for bureaucratic processes to unfold—our community needs support, NOW.
The system has significant gaps in services from 6 AM to 9 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM, leaving individuals vulnerable in Saskatchewan's harsh winters. No one should face hunger or hardship when resources exist. Every voice in our community matters, especially those who have been systematically marginalized due to ongoing colonialism. Together, we can ensure that everyone in Regina has access to the resources they need for their well-being.
