The Freedom Skatepark team is building the first skatepark in the Kingston area in Harbour View, Jamaica, approximately 5km outside of Kingston. The land was donated by the Harbour View Citizen’s Association and the public skatepark will be free and accessible to the whole community of Kingston and the wider country as well.

The Freedom Skatepark has its roots in the tragic death of Andre ‘Wildfiyah’ Thompson, a 20-year old Jamaican skateboarder that was stabbed to death in 2009. A few days before being murdered he was featured in the mini-documentary JA SKATE which was produced by LargeUp and showcased the skateboarding scene in Jamaica. 

Andre expressed his wish for a skatepark to be available to the youth in Jamaica. Following his death Andre’s mother Lorraine Jones took up her son’s wish as a personal mission. Today, ten years later, she sits on the Freedom Skatepark Committee to finally see the project realized. The skatepark will be dedicated in his honor.

The project aims to support the existing skateboarding community as well as at-risk youth in the Kingston area. The primary focus is about providing the youth with a positive, constructive, and healthy outlet to avoid falling into lives of crime and violence.

The skatepark will commence building in Jan 2020 with volunteers from around the world scheduled to participate in this historical project. The skatepark which is designed to be 1000 m2 will provide complementary skateboards and safety gear to the community and implement Concrete Jungle Foundation’s Edu-Skate Programme as well as the Flipping Youth Youth Entrepreneurship Programme.
