UK German Shepherd Rescue hasn't added a story.
When: 11-18 Jan 2014
Distance: 260-268 miles approx.
Ascent: 11,759m Highest Point: 893m
Time: 7 Days, non-stop
UK-GSR volunteer, Francis Clark, has recently started training for The Montane Spine Race. This race is Britain’s most brutal race. The longest, coldest and most demanding mountain marathon in Britain. 268 miles of ice, snow, cold and savage winds. Competitors have 7 days to complete the race. Last year only 3 competitors finished.
This year Francis has entered this amazing race and will be running on behalf of UK-GSR. Preparations for this race are in full flow now and Francis has recently completed a very tough and challenging training weekend.
The Spine Race is a 268 mile, non-stop, winter mountain marathon encompassing the entire Pennine Way. Widely recognised as the most demanding National Trail in Britain, the Pennine Way crosses some of the most beautiful, difficult and challenging terrain found in England, including; the Peak District, Cheviots, Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Park – finishing on the Scottish Borders.
The race is open to anyone with appropriate experience who wishes to test themselves and compete in a truly brutal race. Competitors will face the most extreme weather conditions England has to offer; deep snow, ice, gale force winds and rain in a grueling non-stop, 7 day race from Edale to Kirk Yetholm
At 41 years old Francis is preparing for one of the biggest challenges of his life. Ex-Para regiment and military background, Francis knows how hard these races can be following tough tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kosovo and Sierra Leone and more recently competing in other Ultra Races.
Since leaving the forces Francis has struggled with PTSD and is a recovering alcoholic, something he is not afraid to talk about and is proud of the progress he has made over the years. The Spine Race is his current focus and what helps him continue to overcome his addiction.
Francis great love is GSD’s and as a volunteer with UK-GSR has fostered many dogs in serious need of a temporary home. UK-GSR is supporting Francis with this amazing challenge and all proceeds raised through sponsorship will go to help the beautiful dogs Francis clearly loves so much.
About the race, Francis says “in this race you are on your own, it’s self-supporting, an extreme race during which you could easily make a mistake and lose your life. It’s not about fitness it’s about how you cope mentally. It’s just a long walk if you get it right and if you don’t……….”
