A few days ago, Ellen (@thecatlvt) posted an urgent SOS about a partially paralyzed, 7 week old kitten who needed help in a small rural town in Georgia. Now, most of the time when I see one of those posts, it’s in a place that I can’t help—but this time, I could actually help! I jumped at the chance to help this baby who would have likely been euthanized if she’d stayed in rural Georgia.
Little Raven came to me late last night. Her paralysis came from a dog bite, and she had an open wound on her side from the attack. Her bottom was swollen, and she clearly needed help expressing her bladder and bowels. Her paralysis kept her from being able to potty on her own.
Raven was in such a state that we immediately headed to the ER vet to begin treatment. I needed an expert to show me how to help her potty, and her open wound had me worried. The vet examined her and determined that she has no feeling, reflexes, or movement in her back left leg, and that she has very limited sensation in her back right leg. The vet also confirmed that she is not able to urinate or defecate on her own, and she will need to have her bowels expressed by hand multiple times a day.
The vet recommended euthanasia.
We didn’t save Raven from euthanasia in rural Georgia just to euthanize her in Atlanta. We decided to take her to a specialist instead to make a fully informed decision. The vet appreciated our position and taught me how to express her bladder and rectum before we went home.
Raven’s care and supplies (she has to wear special diapers) are going to stretch Cherokee County Humane Society’s resources to the limit. We’re a small rescue. So, this is where you come in: If everybody on my page donated just $1—not even the cost of a coffee!—we’d have the money to get Raven the care she needs for as long as she lives (even if she lives to be 30!).
