Love for all dogs, compassion and the generosity of our many supporters is at the heart of everything that we do at Skiathos Dog Shelter. The Shelter cares on average for 60 -80 dogs month on month, successfully re-homing 100+ dogs per year to the UK, Denmark, Germany, Scandanavia – even as far away as Australia!.

This tiny Shelter with a massive heart is renowned for providing the stepping-stone to a “forever home”. Each day brings new challenges of love in lots of different sizes. Dogs left at the Shelter range from pregnant bitches, litters of pups, unwanted hunting dogs, neglected and broken souls, old-timers and dogs deemed no longer fit for purpose.  This Shelter has a great sense of Community stretching way beyond this tiny island thanks to its loyal supporters.

Our small team of dedicated Volunteers work every day of the year doing every task needed to care for the dogs – feeding, cleaning, exercising and providing medical care as required. And of course welcoming visitors throughout the summer and managing re-homing activity.

The Shelter receives a lot of support from many people in the form of gifts of medicines, food, toys, virtual adoptions and financial donations. Our fundraisers work tirelessly with weekly quizzes, on-line auctions, Shelter merchandise and most recently through the sale of a fabulous book “And Stanley Made Five” – the story of life after the Shelter in his “forever home”.

However, it costs 1,400 Euros a month for food, water and running costs. There is no electricity or mains water at the Shelter. Every penny and cent raised or donated is spent just keeping the Shelter going on a day-to-day basis. There is no reserve fund.

We urgently need more volunteers at any time of the year, but especially through the summer months with all of the extra dogs and visitors. We recently had two student full-time Volunteers, Emma and Matilde, who each self-funded a month helping at the Shelter, which was invaluable to the core team. They are able to come back for another two months later in the season and can part-fund this trip but we need to raise another 2000 euros to cover the remainder of their expenses. If they are able to come back for a longer period we will be able to put in place a structured training programme for them which will help their future animal welfare careers.  Click on this link for the blog of their time at the Shelter http://emskiathos.blogspot.dk/
