Just before Christmas, a five-week-old kitten found her way into Animal Control. She was the definition of a "hot mess"—her eyes were clouded and swollen, her face was crusted over with snot, and she clearly had a severe upper respiratory infection (URI). Kittens that sick rarely get a chance at Animal Control. They are often euthanized on intake to avoid spreading the infection.
No one deserves to die just because they have a bad cold. Volunteers who watch Animal Control reached out to Half the Way Home to save the little kitten before she could be put down.
The volunteers couldn't have picked a better rescue! At Half the Way Home, we love "hot mess" kitties. We believe that every cat and kitten deserves a chance, even the ones who are expensive to care for. We named the kitten "Star" because we knew she would brighten our lives.
We suspected Star might lose one or both of her eyes when we took her in. The surgery can be an expensive one, but we saw a kitten in need, and we did not care about the cost. We cared about one thing: Would Star have a good quality of life if we saved her? Even if both eyes needed removing, YES, she would have a great quality of life! That was all we needed.
Star is now two months old, and she is almost over her URI. Unfortunately, poor Star is going to ultimately have to lose one of her eyes due to swelling caused by her URI. You can see that the eye is swollen in her picture. Swelling in the eye is extremely painful, but little Star has been nothing but sweet with her foster family, despite the intense pain she must be in.
We have scheduled a surgery for Star's eye removal, but we are going to need donations to help cover her bill. We don't need much—just $300 to help Star live a wonderful, pain-free life as a pirate kitty. Can you help us help Star?
