Three years ago, a small group of people in Tbilisi had a dream: to build a new kind of Jewish community in Georgia.
A community where anyone searching for Jewish life could find a home.
A community where Judaism is open, inclusive, progressive, and deeply connected to Jewish tradition.
That dream became Dor L’Dor — “from generation to generation.”
Today, that small community has grown into a vibrant Jewish center serving people in Tbilisi and beyond. We celebrate Shabbat and Jewish holidays, study Torah and Jewish thought, organize educational programs, build interfaith relationships, and create new opportunities for Jewish life throughout Georgia and the Caucasus.
And now, we have reached a historic milestone.
19 people. One year. One historic moment.
Our first year-long Progressive Jewish conversion class is coming to its conclusion.
15 students from Tbilisi and 4 students from Batumi have spent the past year learning, studying, questioning, practicing, celebrating, and building their connection to Judaism and the Jewish people.
At the end of October, they will have the opportunity to complete their conversion process with a Progressive Beit Din.
This will be the first cohort of students to complete a Progressive, Liberal Jewish conversion program in Georgia — and, as far as we know, the first such cohort in the Caucasus.
This is bigger than a class.
It is the beginning of a new pathway for Jewish life in this region.
But we need your help.
Georgia currently does not have a Progressive Beit Din.
That means that, in order to make this possible, we must bring rabbis from abroad to Georgia.
Travel, accommodation, professional expenses, and the logistics of bringing the Central European Beit Din here create a substantial cost for a small community like Dor L’Dor.
Our students have already contributed toward their education and preparation. Dor L’Dor has invested its own resources as well.
But we don't want financial barriers to prevent these students from reaching the end of their journey.
We need your help to bring the Beit Din to Georgia.
You can help make this historic moment possible.
Your contribution can help:
- Bring the rabbis of the Beit Din to Georgia
- Support the students completing this historic program
- Cover travel and accommodation expenses
- Help Dor L’Dor establish a sustainable model for Progressive conversion in Georgia
- Create a pathway for future students across the Caucasus
From one seed to a growing community
When Dor L’Dor began, we were a small group with a big dream.
One of the congregations that believed in us from the very beginning was Temple Ner Tamid of Bloomfield, New Jersey.
They became our sibling congregation and stood beside us when this was still only an idea.
Three years later, we can see what that seed has become.
- A community.
- A synagogue.
- A conversion program.
- A growing network of Jewish families and individuals.
- A center for Jewish education.
- A bridge between Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and other communities.
And now — 19 people standing at the threshold of becoming part of the Jewish people.
Someone from the World Union for Progressive Judaism once told us:
“You may be one of the smallest communities, but you are one of the loudest.”
We like to think that is because we have something worth shouting about.
Help Us Bring the Beit Din to Georgia
To make this historic moment possible, Dor L’Dor needs to bring the Central European Beit Din to Georgia.
Because there is currently no Progressive Beit Din in Georgia, the rabbis must travel from abroad. This involves not only the Beit Din fees themselves, but also travel, accommodation, coordination and management, local logistics, administrative costs, and other expenses associated with organizing the visit and completing the conversion process.
We estimate that the total cost will be approximately $850 per participant.
Our first cohort includes 19 students from Georgia, meaning that we need to raise approximately:
$16,150
This amount will help cover the costs associated with bringing the Central European Beit Din to Georgia and completing the conversion process for our students.
Our students have already made a significant financial commitment to their year-long education and preparation. Dor L’Dor has also contributed from its own resources. But we do not want financial circumstances to become the final barrier preventing these students from completing their Jewish journey.
We are therefore asking our friends and supporters to help us raise $16,150 — approximately $850 for each of the 19 students.
Every contribution brings us closer to the moment when these students can complete their journey and become part of the Jewish people.
And every contribution helps establish something even bigger: a sustainable pathway for Progressive Jewish conversion in Georgia and, ultimately, throughout the Caucasus.
Help us bring the Beit Din to Georgia.
Help us support
our students.
Help us make Jewish history.
