Fifty years on Milton Street. Let's keep it standing.

I grew up in The Word. Literally. My parents Adrian and Luci founded the bookstore, and our house around the corner was an extension of it, with books floor to ceiling and a steady stream of readers, writers, and collectors wandering through the door. Over the years our family grew, and so did yours. You know who you are. This story belongs to all of us.

The home of The Word, 469 Milton Street, is one of the oldest buildings in the neighbourhood. It remembers everything. The staircase has foot-shaped grooves worn into its steps from thousands of trips up and down carrying millions of books. A metal ring embedded in the wall recalls its origins as a stable. Its bricks were made by hand. Look closely and you’ll find the occasional paw print from cats crossing them as they were drying, well over a century ago.

This small building has given us so much. Now it needs something back, starting with the restoration of its historic facade. We’ve set a fundraising goal of $50,000. If you’re reading this, you are exactly who we have in mind. You can contribute online right here, drop off a cheque or a cash donation at the store (in an envelope labelled One Word Campaign), or simply share this page with someone who you think should know our story.

Every contribution brings us closer to our goal. For $10, you will receive a postcard size print of our historic facade, available for immediate pickup at the store. For $25, a letter size print of the same image, also available right away. For $50, a One Word tote bag. For $75, a black One Word t-shirt. All merchandise is available for pickup at The Word at the close of the campaign.

And then there are two offers in a category of their own. For $200, an original brick from this very building, with “One Word” stamped on it forever. Only 50 available. Please note that bricks will be ready for pickup at The Word in Spring 2027, following completion of the facade restoration.

For those who feel a deeper connection to this place, the first 10 donors to contribute $1,000 will have their name on a brass nameplate on our antique bookcase, home to our collection of rare and collectible books. Please include your full name exactly as you’d like it to appear in your donation message.

This year, our 50th anniversary brought this community together in ways none of us could have ever imagined. Let’s keep  building  that momentum. Join us in writing the next chapter.

Il n’y a qu’un seul Word. Cinquante ans sur la rue Milton. Gardons-la sur pied.

J’ai grandi dans une librairie. Littéralement. Mes parents, Adrian et Luci, ont fondé The Word et notre maison, juste au coin de la rue, en était le prolongement, avec ses livres du plancher au plafond et un flot constant de lecteurs, d’écrivains et de collectionneurs franchissant la porte. Au fil des années, notre famille s’est agrandie - et la vôtre aussi. Vous savez qui vous êtes. C’est notre histoire.

Cette année, notre 50e anniversaire a rassemblé cette communauté d’une manière que personne n’aurait pu imaginer. Cette petite bâtisse de briques n’a jamais été aussi pleine de vie. L’expression « prendre son élan » - voire « rebâtir à neuf » semble particulièrement appropriée. (Vous pensiez vraiment passer à travers sans un petit jeu de mots? ;)

Il y a quelque chose qui parle là-deda ns : la librairie qui a résisté à l’économie numérique a maintenant besoin d’aide pour sa structure bien réelle, faite de briques et de mortier. The Word est plus forte que jamais. Maintenant, la façade qui a soutenu tout cela a elle-même besoin d’être soutenue.

Parmi les plus anciens bâtiments de la rue Milton, celui-ci se souvient de tout. Les marches en bois de l’escalier sont creusées d’empreintes de pas, usées par des dizaines de milliers d’allers-retours transportant des boîtes de livres. Un anneau métallique est encastré dans le mur, vestige de l’époque où le bâtiment servait d’écurie. Ses briques ont été façonnées à la main; regardez de près et vous y trouverez parfois l’empreinte d’une patte de chat qui a traversé l’argile encore humide, il y a plus d’un siècle.

Ce petit bâtiment nous a tout donné. Aujourd’hui, c’est à son tour de recevoir - et votre contribution rendra cela possible. Nous avons fixé un objectif de campagne de 50 000$ à atteindre d’ici le 14 juin. Si vous lisez ceci, vous êtes exactement la personne à qui nous pensons. Vous pouvez contribuer en ligne ici même, déposer un chèque ou un don en argent à la librairie (dans une enveloppe identifiée « One Word Campaign ») et partager cette page et notre histoire avec un ami.

Chaque contribution nous rapproche de notre objectif. Pour 10$, vous recevrez une carte postale de notre façade historique, disponible immédiatement en magasin. Pour 25$, une impression au format lettre de la même image est également disponible tout de suite. Pour 50$, un tote bag One Word . Pour 75 $, un t-shirt noir One Word . Tous les articles seront disponibles pour ramassage à The Word à la fin de la campagne.

Et puis, il y a deux offres de catégorie distincte! Pour 200 $, une brique originale de ce bâtiment, estampillée One Word pour toujours. Seulement 50 disponibles. Veuillez noter que les briques seront prêtes à être récupérées à The Word au printemps 2027, une fois la restauration de la façade terminée.

Pour celles et ceux qui ressentent une connexion plus profonde avec cet endroit, les 10 premiers donateurs contribuant 1000 $ verront leur nom gravé sur une plaque en laiton apposée à la bibliothèque antique abritant notre sélection de livres rares et de collection.
