Quinn's Retreat hasn't added a story.
This is the story of Quinn's retreat and my beautiful children Dyllon and Quinn...
Dyllon & Quinn’s Story
On 9th December 2018 our world came crashing down around us, our beautiful, funny, quirky, fierce, amazing 17 year old daughter Quinn decided that life was just too hard for her. She left our home, walked to the end of our street down some steps to a little area of wasteland and hanged herself from a little tree.
That little tree didn’t look strong enough to have held her, when the police showed us the tree I remember thinking I wanted to cut it down, burn it and never have to set eyes on it again. The next morning our son Dyllon who had travelled home from university in Manchester where he was studying Philosophy said that he thought we should take some flowers to the tree.
We went and bought the most beautiful flowers and laid them in the branches of the tree, later that day Dyllon went back to the tree and told us that other people had laid flowers. As the days passed the tree became a sea of flowers, cards, gifts and kind messages from friends, family, neighbours and strangers. We came to think of the tree as a place of beauty, a place of solace and peace in a dark and scary new world that we were faced with.
We decided to fund-raise to buy a memorial bench and buy plants to make a memorial garden. We only hoped to raise a few hundred pounds, however we were absolutely overwhelmed with the kindness of friends, family, neighbours and strangers. We raised enough in one day to buy the bench and the plants. With the help of our neighbour or as he likes to be called our “gardener” Eric, Quinn’s garden was made. It is beautiful, it’s a place of calm that we know many people enjoy visiting.
Before Quinn died we had booked to go to a holiday cottage in the peak district for Christmas and while we were there an idea began to form. Spending that week away just the three of us gave us the time to just be together without all of the usual worries, we spoke about her and laughed about all of the good times we shared, we cried together and that time just the three of us was so important. We decided that we would like to help other families to have that time together. And so the idea of Quinn’s Retreat was founded.
We have recently bought our first static caravan where families who have lost a loved one who have sadly taken their own life can go and spend some time together.
Dyllon was a leading force and proud trustee of Quinn’s Retreat, his strength and humour helped us to push on when we hit obstacles and negative comments. On 8th October 2019 our wonderfully intelligent, enigmatic, kind, loving, beautiful 21 year old son decided that this world was just too cruel for him and took the awful decision to take his own life.
Dyllon and Quinn were so special and that is why their story can not end with their death.
We will carry on with Quinn’s Retreat in honour of both of our amazing children, without them we would not be the people we are today. They taught us so much and our world is a darker place without them, however in their memory we hope to be able to bring just a little bit of light into the lives of others, this will be Dyllon and Quinn’s story.
