Barefaced Greek is a new initiative run by Mairin O’Hagan and Helen Eastman to create digital educational resources for the study of Classics, and the celebration of Greek drama in performance. We produce exciting and accessible short-films using text from original Greek drama, for an international, online audience. Our aim is to invigorate the online presence of Classical drama for young people, and to inspire a love of the Greek world in the YouTube generation. Following on form our screening at the V&A museum (New Films, Old Drama 21st-30th April 2017), you can watch our first four films film here: We have shot a further three films in 2018 and our seeking support to help us through post production to help us complete our next wave of barefaced Greek performances.

The new generation of classicists, linguists and theatre lovers expect to be able to access online video content. For those interested in experiencing Shakespeare off the page, there is a wealth of opportunity, not only in theatre, but free of charge online. YouTube connects viewers immediately to a multitude of fresh and engaging deliveries of original texts, with compelling artistry and high production values. We to use this dynamic medium to bring the Ancient world to life for a new generation. Greek drama has always been energetic, popular and driven by collective experience, and Youtube is the community for sharing creativity today.

We are passionate believers in the magic of original language performance. Both having worked with Greek text for stage, film and audio, we are evangelical about the power of connecting to tragedy through the language in which it was first wrought. Hearing Greek drama spoken makes it come alive. Moreover, we present Greek text from the point of view of both linguists and artists, inspiring young people to think about how classical texts can be works of art for today.

We are fundraising to make a series of ten short films, subtitled in languages from around the world. We want our videos to be free and available to everyone, for school learners as well as for hose who have not had the chance to study Classics at in private education. We want to excite and include young people, so we cannot charge for our content. As such are reliant on funding and donations to make these films happen. Please help us show young people just how exciting Classical drama can be!
