No doubt, Garvey has had a rough life so far. Recently found at a local dumpster, this 1 year old Chihuahua mix was first thought to be dead by the woman that found him as he was just lying on the ground and didn't move at all after the woman first touched him. Of course, his horrific appearance didn't do anything to convince this woman that Garvey had any life left in him. But once Garvey did move the woman gathered him up, took him home and called our rescue seeking help.
Garvey was taken to our vet's office yesterday, diagnosed with demodex mange and found to be full of tapeworms. He definitely is in a lot of pain and discomfort but our vet's staff immediately started him on pain management, antibiotics and treatment of his demodex and tapeworms.
It's thought that a flea infestation started Garvey's hair loss and the abundance of tapeworms and the stress that those two symptoms caused on his body triggered his demodex to flair up. It's apparent that Garvey's former owner decided to simply let him die instead of getting him treated.
The good news is that Garvey can be saved and is expected to make a full recovery. While at our vet's office, where he'll be boarded for the next week, Garvey will also receive an update on all of his vaccinations. We'll look at having him neutered after he recovers from his current situation.
