The election of Donald Trump represents an imminent threat to democracy, socioeconomic justice, and the environment in the United States, Brazil, and other parts of the world.
The new U.S. administration intends to deepen its ties with the extreme right in Brazil. It will turn its representatives in international bodies against progressive social transformations. It promises to abandon all efforts to address climate change and environment degradation.
Rather than despairing about this new political situation, we are doubling our efforts.
Since the founding of the Washington Brazil Office in 2020, we have made enormous strides in our strategic goals.
- We continue to support the work of 75 affiliated Brazilian social movements and civil society organizations as they articulate their agendas internationally.
- We have expanded our advocacy work in the U.S. Congress, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and in bodies of the United Nations.
- We have selected sixteen WBO Research Fellows for the 2024-25 academic year to do collaborative work in the areas of democracy and the extreme right, the environment, and U.S.-Brazilian relations.
- The WBO Bulletin, now in both English and Portuguese, reaches a weekly audience of 3,000 readers.
- Since its inception, the English-language podcast Brazil Unfiltered has produced 75 episodes interviewing leading specialists on the situation in Brazil.
